Young EnterpriseSurrey Competition Final 2011
The Young Enterprise Surrey Finals were kindly hosted by The University of Surrey, on 13th May.
‘Ragbags’ from Rosebery School in Epsom won ‘Best Company of 2011’ for their personalised and reusable bags.
Louise Punter, Chief Executive of Surrey Chambers of Commerce, presented the trophy to ‘Ragbags’ who beat the cream of Surrey companies to take the award. ‘Ragbags’ will now represent Surrey at the South East Regional Finals at The Capitol in Horsham on 14th June.
Over 900 students from Surrey schools took part in this year’s Young Enterprise Company Programme. Each company creates a product or service, sells shares to raise capital and then sets out to run a business to return profit to their shareholders.
Judges Louise Punter, Steve Hyland (Retail Therapy TV) and Mike Pearson (Surrey Economic Partnership) were impressed by the variety of innovative products this year which included glow in the dark tent pegs, retractable headphone mechanisms and a variety of unique fashion items.
Other awards went to ‘AvantGarde’ (St George’s College, Addlestone) Best Use of Technology; ‘Zync’ (St Teresa’s School, Dorking) Best Marketing Strategy; ‘Flux’ (Royal Grammar School, Guildford) Best Company Report; ‘Ragbags’ (Rosebery School, Epsom) Best Presentation; ‘Mugnificent’ (Salesian School, Chertsey) Best Display.
“As always we were impressed at the superb quality of all this year’s finalists”, said Ken Henderson, Chairman of Young Enterprise Surrey. ”Every year hundreds young people across Surrey commit amazing enthusiasm, energy and commercial flair to running their own business. I’m sure many of them will go on to contribute to growing successful businesses in the UK in years to come”. The evening’s facilitator, Neil Pringle of BBC Radio Surrey, agreed that the standards seem to rise every year.
Young Enterprise has an ongoing demand for business volunteers to mentor these young companies. Young Enterprise Surrey uses over 70 business volunteers each year. The commitments is only one hour a week over eight months of the year and most volunteers agree it is a tremendously positive experience!
